S. Clinton Hastings letter : Norwich, N.Y., to Charles Anthony, Gouverneur, N.Y. : ALS, 1835 Aug. 31.

Letter from Hastings, principal of the Norwich Academy, to his friend Anthony advising him on what makes a great lawyer and a great man. Hastings begins with his own intention to leave New York and study law in another state for only two years. In advising Anthony, he notes the high number of lawyers and declares that hard work, sacrifice, and application, not merely natural talent, will be essential to distinguish himself in this field. Also, given that human nature is similar, Hastings suggests that Anthony reflect upon his own strengths and weaknesses in order to understand others. Finally, he states that in his experience, he has come to realize that there is not a great difference among men, regardless of one's status in life, and that if one applies himself and is able to gain command of his own mind, he is sure to be a great man.
